would you be interested in a mobile version of Docear for iPhone and Android? How could it look like?

      • Full text search in pdf, possibly using Apache Lucene

Apache Lucene is a GPL full text search engine. A search across the literature repository for key sentences could be used to automate the creation of links in the mind map.

          • Integration of zotero in Docear or at least a decent connector to use its DB

Docear already uses FreeMind and JabRef. There are many shortcomings in some areas such as web import, PDF rename, collection management, PDF inspection, Google Scholar Integration ,... all of these can be solved just by developing a connector to work with Zotero or complete integration. Consider this scenario: The user uses zotero to add and manage papers (nearly complete solution) and a connector (or simply a Bibtex) from Docear monitor Zotero's DB (or bibtex) and add newly added papers to the incoming node.

Currently Docear is just able to monitor Zotero's bibTex in its reference panel But what I like…

We can understand the attraction of the idea that Docear and Zotero are integrated or at least better connected. Let me elaborate on the different options:

              1. A complete integration
              -———————————————-
Completely integrating one tool into the other one (as Docear integrates Jabref) is nearly impossible (technically) because Zotero and Docear are written in different programming languages and use completely different architectures.

              2a. A two-way synchronization
              -———————————————————-
We agree that it would be awesome if Docear would just completely monitor Zotero for new data and vice versa…

              2b. A one-way synchronization
              -—————————————————————
.. or to have Docear monitoring Zotero’s DB to e.g. automatically import PDFs that you add to Zotero. Personally, I would love such a feature and it’s technically possible, but I don’t see us having the time to implement it soon. If there is an enthusiastic user who wants to try it: please, do it…

            • multiple bibtex files

Right now only one bibtex file can be used with Docear. I 'd like to use multiple files.

                  • Create nodes from BibTeX entries

At present, Docear creates nodes using PDF files from a directory, and then adds reference data from a BibTeX file.

                    This causes the following problems:

                    1. You need to have the actual PDF file. This means that Docear cannot be easily used to manage a literature search.

                    2. If you rename, move or accidentally delete a PDF file, Docear will lose track and the node may be deleted.

                    3. The number of formats Docear supports is finite. BibTeX can support infinite formats.

Instead, Docear should use BibTeX as the master database for nodes. This is more elegant, as it means…

I agree, it makes sense to show BibTeX entries in the mind map, too. I don’t know when we will implement this feature but some day we will! :-)

                    • Search reference list from paper and hyperlink to existing papers

It would be fantastic, if Docear would read the Reference list at the end of a paper and automatically search for papers which are already in my literature mindmap and hyperlink to them in some kind of childe node. Since this might be a difficult, some literature search tools offer the option to export the reference list as a bibtex file ...searching this file might be easier... Cheers (Docear rocks!!)

on first glance, i believe it should be easy to implement drag&drop from Docear to other applications such as Mendeley. For the other way around you would have to contact the software developers of Mendeley, Zotero, etc.

we have started to look into different options and also have programmed a very early prototype. But I cannot say when this functionality will be ready for being released.

                          • One child having several parents

Right now, a parent can have several children, but a child cannot have several parents. Since I am trying to organize papers by citations - who cited whom - it's confusing that you are saying that a paper can only be cited by one paper, not several papers. In real life, it quickly becomes a complicated network of collaborating authors citing each other's papers. Current mind map is too linear.
If you have an alternative way of organizing papers in one research topic, share it.

A lot of people do their highlighting and adding notes in Kindl or other mobile eBook-Readers. Calibre is a free pdf-ebook handler, which being cross platform and supporting nearly any device already solves some compatibility issues. And its internal eBook reader supports all formats, so integrating that into Docear improves its usability. Could it be used as cross platform pdf-viewer?

I noticed that Docear is using its own matedata matching engine to extract Bibtex information. I did try several Pdfs, I am not satisfied with the outcome. I would suggest Docear using Google Scholar and maybe other search engines as a Bibtex information extraction tool. Those engines are there for many years and will be working for many years we can tell in the future. I think using their engines will save your efforts to build up your own engine, and satisfy the users' need in time. The ideal workflow is as below:

                                        1. extract title info from the PDF. …

                                        • Paper and Metadata fetcher for Web Browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, ...)

I use Zotero at the moment and it is superb. If Docear can include something like zotero (an applet may be?) which can directly capture bibliographic/citation information from web pages (Pubmed, journal databases etc.) it would be indispensable and extremely usefull.

I know this feature would be awesome. However, it would require developing add-ons for all the major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, …) and currently, we don’t have the man-power for this. However, someday we hopefully will be able to do this.

btw. I edited your subject to make it better understandable for non-zotero users
